Steel cut on new Ollis-class NYC passenger ferries

On Tuesday, the City of New York Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) Staten Island Ferry Division and Eastern Shipbuilding Group (ESG) cut steel starting the construction of the first of three new Staten Island Ollis-class Ferries.

The 98-metre, double-ended, 4,500-passenger ferries are from a preliminary design provided by Elliot Bay Design Group, with each ferry featuring four electro-motive diesel (EMD) 12-710 Tier 4 compliant propulsion engines with each engine pair powering a Reintjes DUP 3000 P combining reduction gears and a 36 RV6 ECS/285-2 Voith Schneider propeller at each end of the vessel.
