Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has canceled its 2020 contract for the Ocracoke Express passenger-only ferry.

The ferry service was introduced in 2019 as a transportation alternative for people traveling between Hatteras and Ocracoke islands on North Carolina’s Outer Banks.

NCDOT officials will decide over the following months whether to resume the passenger ferry service next year.

Meanwhile, the NCDOT confirmed that its Ferry Division will continue operating its fleet of Ro-Pax ferries between Hatteras and Ocracoke.
