Spanish shipbuilder Gondán has been awarded a contract to build 10 all-electric commuter ferries for Transtejo and Soflusa, a public transport company that serves the Portuguese capital city of Lisbon.

The vessels will each have a length of 40 metres, capacity for 540 passengers, a service speed of 16 knots, and a maximum speed of 17 knots. A fully integrated electric power solution, which will include a 1,860kWh battery pack, and an integrated marine and propulsion automation system will be supplied by ABB.

The new ferries are slated to enter service between 2022 and 2024, replacing the older vessels that presently operate on Lisbon’s Tagus River.
