Washington State operator Kitsap Transit has taken delivery of a new fast aluminium ferry from Nichols Brothers Boat Builders.

Commander is the second ferry in a series to be built for Kitsap Transit. The first vessel, Enetai, was delivered in January 2021.

Designed by UK-based BMT, Commander measures 140 by 37 feet (42 by 11.2 metres) and is powered by two MTU 16V400M65L engines that each produce 3,435 hp (2,561 kW) at 1,800 rpm. The engines drive two Kongsberg waterjets to propel the ferry to speeds of around 40 knots.

The newbuild also has seating for up to 255 passengers as well as space for 26 bicycles.
