Egypt’s Health Ministry reports that three people are confirmed dead after a passenger boat capsized and sank in the Nile River near the city of Giza on Sunday, February 25.

The unnamed vessel was transporting at least ten people when it capsized just off the Giza village of Nekla at around 07:00 local time on Sunday.

Five survivors and the bodies of three deceased victims were subsequently pulled out of the river.

Four of the survivors had exhibited symptoms of asphyxia. Three have since been cleared for discharge from a local hospital while the fourth remains under observation.

An undetermined number of passengers are still missing, according to local media.

The cause of the incident is still being investigated, though one eyewitness said the boat was carrying a number of people well beyond its rated capacity of four.
