China Classification Society (CCS) has confirmed that construction will soon start on the first Chinese-built vessel to be powered by hydrogen fuel cells.

Named Sanxia Qing Zhou 1 ("Three Gorges Hydrogen Boat 1"), the 49.9- by 10.4-metre catamaran ferry will be a hybrid vessel fitted with hydrogen fuel cells and lithium batteries. Economical cruising speeds will enable it to cover a range of 200 kilometres.

The vessel will be operated primarily on the Yangtze River.
