Boundary Layer Technologies, a California-based marine technology startup, recently unveiled the first images of a new electric hydrofoiling ferry concept design.

The ferry will be able to sail up to 100 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 40 knots thanks to Boundary Layer Technology’s proprietary hydrofoil technology and podded propulsion system.

Compared to fossil fuel alternatives, the battery electric propulsion can significantly reduce cabin noise by up to 20 dB compared to conventional ferries. Its foiling system will also offer excellent seakeeping and ride comfort.

The company plans to have the first examples of the ferry in operation by the first quarter of 2024 in regions such as the United States, Scandinavia, and the Mediterranean.
