BMT launches hybrid ferry design

BMT has launched a new hybrid ferry design, which aims to provide a cleaner, more cost-efficient energy option for ferry operators.

At 31 metres long, the 149-passenger ferry has a top speed of 20 knots and provides an intelligent hybrid system delivering silent and vibration-free power.

Working in collaboration with BAE Systems, the vessel uses a hybrid drive system. When the upper end of power is needed, the diesel engines are there to support, keeping the batteries topped up at the same time.

The vessel’s 160kWh energy storage system can also be further charged whilst alongside and by a solar array on the vessel roof.
