Austal Australia has launched a new series of electric-powered, high-speed ferries with the introduction of a battery-powered catamaran design.

The vessel will have an LOA of 46 metres, a beam of 12.3 metres, a draught of less than two metres, and seating for up to 450 passengers as well as space for 10 bicycles.

Two full-electric, permanent magnetic motors powered by a pair of lithium-ion batteries combined with the lightweight, low-resistance hull form to deliver a maximum speed of 25 knots. A maximum range of 175 nautical miles can also be achieved on a single full charge of the batteries.

The ferry will feature large panoramic windows, skylights, and double automatic-sliding external doors that provide direct, easy access to the passenger deck for fast passenger turnarounds.

The vessel is designed to be operated by a crew of three.
