Viking Cruises has placed an order with Germany’s Neptun Werft shipyard in Rostock for seven new river ships.

The newbuild order includes six Viking Longships, which will sail on the Rhine, Main and Danube Rivers, and an additional vessel that is specifically designed for Portugal’s Douro River. They will be delivered in 2019.

Accommodating 190 passengers in 95 staterooms, Viking Longships have a patented corridor design and include an all-weather indoor/outdoor “aquavit terrace” with retractable floor-to-ceiling glass doors. Their sustainability upgrades include onboard solar panels, organic herb gardens and energy-efficient hybrid engines that reduce vibrations for a smooth ride.
