Silversea Cruises ship to have polar capability following refit

Monaco-based Silversea Cruises has confirmed that one of its ships is currently undergoing a refurbishment program in Poland to enable it to operate as an ice-class, ultra-luxury expedition vessel.

The refurbishment program on the 1995-built Silver Wind includes ice-strengthening of the hull for cruising in polar waters as well as a host of technology upgrades.

Following the refit, the vessel will also have a new advanced wastewater treatment plant, new food waste treatment facilities, and new fuel-saving boilers.

Silver Wind is scheduled to rejoin the Silversea fleet by November of this year. Its initial operational voyage following the refurbishment will be a 22-day journey to Antarctica.

The refit is being carried out at Remontowa Shipbuilding in Gdansk.
