Second passenger terminal for Kiel’s Ostseekai berth

A second passenger handling facility will be built at Germany’s Port of Kiel to help its Ostseekai cruise shipping terminal cater for larger ships.

The €7.5 million (US$9.2 million) terminal will enable the port to offer a dedicated passenger handling facility for each cruise ship. 

Ostseekai has had two cruise ship berths and one terminal building for handling passengers and their luggage since 2007.

The two-storey terminal building of 3,700 square metres designed by eins:eins architects Hillenkamp and Roselius will be built as an integrated northern extension of the existing terminal building, with connections on both levels.

Baggage handling will be carried out on the ground floor.

The upper floor will be used for check-in procedures and passenger waiting areas, allowing passengers to walk across a gangway and directly on to their ship. 

Construction is expected to begin in August, with completion and operation to follow in the second quarter of 2019.
