Eight people were injured after a crane fell on and damaged a cruise ship while it was undergoing unscheduled maintenance in the Bahamas on Monday, April 1.

The incident occurred as Royal Caribbean International’s Oasis of the Seas was in drydock at the Grand Bahamas Shipyard for repairs to be carried out on its azimuth thruster pod assembly.

Only construction personnel were on board when one of the yard’s large cranes collapsed onto the ship’s stern just after 13:00 local time.

The crane damaged Oasis of the Seas’ aqua theatre and caused the entire vessel to list noticeably to starboard.

The incident left eight of the workers with injuries though none were considered to be life-threatening.

Local authorities are presently working to determine the full extent of the damage sustained by both the vessel and the dock structure.
