Two missing after ferry sinks off Ketapang, Indonesia

Two people have gone missing after a passenger vessel sank off Tanjung Sambar in Indonesia’s Ketapang District on Saturday, July 20.

The ferry Arta Jaya was sailing from Madura to Pontianak with 25 people on board when it sank at around 01:50 local time.

The Basarnas national search and rescue (SAR) agency then deployed a team of responders, which arrived at the area of the incident at 03:25. Rescue teams from the Indonesian Navy, the Pontianak maritime police, and the Pontianak port authority were also despatched to render assistance.

All but two of the ferry’s occupants have since been rescued. The fate and whereabouts of the remaining two passengers remain unknown.

Authorities are continuing their search for the two missing passengers in an area off Tanjung Sambar that has since expanded to cover over 200 nautical miles.
