Ferry services across Yell Sound in the Shetland Islands were temporarily suspended after a fire broke out in the engine room of a Ro-Pax shortly after it left the port of Toft on Monday, May 6.

The crew of Daggri discovered the blaze on board their vessel at around 11:20 local time, after which they reversed course and sailed back to Toft.

Upon reaching port, the passengers and vehicles were evacuated as the crew worked to extinguish the blaze.

Firefighting teams from Braewere, Lerwick, and Scalloway rushed to the scene to render assistance.

Daggri’s crew were able to put out the fire and ferry operations subsequently resumed at 14:30.

An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the incident as the schedule for the vessel’s repairs is being finalised.
