An explosion on board a Stena Line Ro-Pax at the Port of Gothenburg on Sunday, April 28, has left one person seriously injured.

The incident occurred at 09:30 local time as Stena Germanica, which had sailed from Kiel, was preparing to offload vehicles after having arrived at the port.

The explosion occurred on one of the vessel’s car decks and left one individual, identified only as a male in his fifties, with burns on the face and scalp.

The injured individual was rushed to hospital and has been reported as being in serious but stable condition.

A gas stove inside the cabin of one of the trucks on board Stena Germanica was said to have exploded, a local police official said.

The vessel has since been emptied of vehicles to allow police investigators to make a more thorough assessment of the affected car deck and thus determine what led to the incident.
