US Congress authorises US$30 million in total federal grant funding for ferry operations

The US Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Authority (FTA) has confirmed that approximately US$30 million in competitive grant funding will be made available for passenger ferry projects nationwide.

The grant funding, authorised by Congress as part of the Passenger Ferry Grant Program, will be spent on projects that develop and support ferry service on many of the nation’s waterways.

The FTA will award competitive grants to states and public entities to purchase, repair, or modernise ferry boats, terminals, and related facilities and equipment, supporting existing ferry service and the establishment of new passenger ferry service.

Projects will be evaluated and selected based on specific criteria, including the need for improvements, demonstration of benefits to transit service, and integration with local and regional long-term planning.

The FTA has stated that it will accept applications until 23:59 Eastern time on April 15, 2019.
