Ro-Pax runs aground in waters off Lombok, Indonesia

A Ro-Pax ferry ran aground just off Lombok Island in Indonesia at around 12:40 local time on Thursday, January 3.

The 53- by 12-metre Kalebi was transporting passengers and vehicles from Kayangan Port in Lombok to Poto Tano in West Nusa Tenggara province at the time of the incident.

Bad weather in the area had resulted in reduced visibility, thereby making the vessel’s crew unable to avoid a shallow rocky area just off the island of Gili Lebur.

A ferry that had arrived on scene to render assistance was able to safely evacuate all the distressed passengers back to Kayangan Port.

Kalebi remains grounded off Gili Lebur as of 20:30 local time on January 3.
