Joint venture to design first all-electric ferry for New Zealand

SSC Marine, a joint venture partnership between Stimson Yacht Design and Naval Architecture, Malcolm Tennant Designs, and Kit Carlier Design, will help design New Zealand’s first all-electric passenger ferry.

The new 18.5-metre, 130-passenger ferry for a New Zealand-based operator will be utilising electricity which is generated entirely from renewable sources. This will ensure zero carbon emissions even with daily operational sailing.

The vessel’s full carbon/foam construction and canoe-stern hull form will help reduce resistance, which in turn will mean that the weight and cost of batteries will be minimised.
