Ro-Pax ship reaches port after suspected fire at sea

A Lithuanian-flagged Ro-Pax ferry has safely reached its destination after a fire reportedly broke out on board as it sailed through the Baltic Sea.

Regina Seaways was carrying 335 people from Kiel, Germany, to Klaipeda, Lithuania, when a technical problem produced smoke, triggering the fire extinguishing system in the engine room.

The ship restarted its engine and resumed its voyage after being stranded for six hours.

With an escort of Lithuanian Navy ships that were sent to the area of the incident, Regina Seaways sailed on its own power towards Klaipeda, finally reaching its destination at 21:30 local time on October 2.

No injuries were reported among the passengers and crew members.

Ship’s operator DFDS has denied it was a fire or an explosion that caused the smoke.
