Dutch design firm completes 250m floating dry dock concept

The Panamax-size dock is designed to move between newbuilding, repair and contained recycling, with on-board capture of contaminated water. Financing, site selection and detailed engineering are the next stages.

Dutch naval architecture firm Conoship International has completed the concept design for a floating dry dock (FDD) developed with Elegant Exit Company (EEC) based in Woerden.

The FDD is intended for shipbuilding and modular assembly; maintenance, repair and overhaul; and the dismantling of end-of-life vessels. Conoship said the combination would let an operator adjust its focus among construction, maintenance and recycling in response to market demand.

The completed dock will have an LOA of 250.4 metres, a pontoon length of 230.4 metres, an overall beam of 68 metres, a clear beam of 56 metres between the inner walls, and a depth of 23 metres. It is sized for Panamax vessels, with space retained for equipment staging, cutting and assembly.

A 20-metre overhang will serve marine logistics while a high-capacity gantry crane will run the full working length of the dock.

The design includes dedicated infrastructure to capture and process water from contaminated bilges, wastewater, and ballast water that has not been treated.

Conoship is presenting the dock as an alternative to beaching that can operate independently of local shore constraints.

"The primary design objective was establishing a controlled industrial environment that prevents environmental discharge and protects personnel," the company said.

The completed package sets out verification of the structure and operational procedures.

EEC will now seek financing from investors, identify a regional site, and align with regulations before moving to basic and detailed engineering.

Conoship's project listing indicated India as the dock's country, with the building yard yet to be determined.

EEC appointed Conoship on July 9 to finalise the design for a planned network of approximately 15 FDDs in Turkey, India, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Oman, Egypt and other shipping hubs.

EEC said the recycling function is being developed around the "no beaching, no landing" principles of the UAE Ship Recycling Regulation.
