Operation KE: The Cactus Air Force and the Japanese Withdrawal from Guadalcanal
From Baird Maritime
While intensely focused on the unsuccessful aviation centric attempts to prevent the rescue of 10,000 Japanese troops from Guadalcanal in early 1943, this intensely researched book does not neglect the Imperial Japanese Navy's counterveiling success.
The book is, if anything, rather over-detailed and too long but for anyone seriously interested in this remarkable action, the detail is worth wading through.
It is a complex story and one that marked one of Japan's few successful operations in the Pacific War. It marked the end of the long and bloody Guadalcanal action but it was also the beginning, as the authors describe it, of Japan's long and destructive retreat to its battered homeland.
