India's National Institute of Wind Energy (NIWE) has called for expressions of interest from developers to build a 1GW offshore wind project off the coast of Gujarat.

If built, the proposed project in a 400-square-kilometre zone up to 40 kilometres from the port of Pipavav could be India's first offshore wind farm.

NIWE said the expression of interest (EOI) is open to developers who have installed at least 500MW of offshore wind, Indian developers who have installed 500MW of onshore capacity and have a "tie-up" with offshore manufacturers, or developers with offshore experience.

Interested parties must have an average annual turnover of at least INR5 billion (US$77 million) over the past three years.

The EOI has a May 25 deadline.
