China Southern Power grid orders ROV

Subsea equipment manufacturer Soil Machine Dynamics (SMD) has received an order for its Atom 1,000-metre, work class remotely operated vehicle (ROV) from China Southern Power Extra High Voltage Power Transmission Company.

The 75kW ROV will be used for inspection of the 31-kilometre physical power cable connections in the high-current Qiongzhou Strait between Hainan Island and mainland China.

SMD will integrate a cable tracking system and other survey tools to perform cable inspection on the China Southern Power grid (CSG)

SMD business development director Mark Collins said the ROV, which features Curvetech components, is scheduled for delivery at the end of 2018.

It will be mobilised on CSG’s new cable installation vessel.
