Sri Lanka’s Colombo Dockyard has been awarded a contract to construct a new cable laying and repair vessel for submarine telecommunications company Orange Marine France.

The BV-classed, Vard-designed vessel will have station keeping systems and will be capable of low fuel consumption thanks to its optimised hull form. It will also be equipped to support remotely operated vehicle (ROV) inspections.

The vessel will have a length of 100 metres, a beam of 18.8 metres, a deadweight of 1,800 tonnes, accommodations for 76 crew and technicians, three tanks for storing power and fibre-optic cables, and diesel-electric propulsion that will deliver a speed of 14.5 knots.

Delivery to Orange Marine is scheduled for early 2023.
