One person was killed while several others suffered varying degrees of injury after part of a concrete pier collapsed at a shipyard in Singapore on Monday, August 22.

The incident at the Tuas facilities of Keppel Shipyard occurred when a section of the quayside gave way and caused two workers to fall into the sea on Monday, the company said in a statement.

Of the two individuals who went into the water, one was safely rescued shortly afterwards while the other initially went missing.

The missing worker, who has been identified as a Bangladeshi national, was found deceased on Wednesday, August 24, following an extensive search of the surrounding waters by Singapore Civil Defence Force personnel.

Sitting atop the collapsed section of quayside was a rail-mounted crane used for topside installation of floating production storage and offloading vessels (FPSOs). The base ended up partially submerged though the crane itself did not topple.

The country’s Ministry of Manpower has ordered all works at the affected pier to be stopped temporarily while the cause of the incident is being investigated.

Keppel Shipyard has assured that it is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation.
