From Baird Maritime
Love him or loathe him, those who live from and love the sea cannot afford to ignore Professor Callum Roberts. He is a very articulate advocate for marine conservation.
While your reviewer finds some of Robert's comments to be shrill and his claims exaggerated, his book still provides a really good overview of the changes mankind has wrought in or on its seas. Read carefully and sceptically, this book is of considerable value.
His basic premise is unarguable. Climate and other human induced phenomena are causing our seas to change. It is a pity, though, that like the boy who cried wolf, Roberts makes silly claims such as that "we are fishing our oceans to extinction". That is simply impossible both economically and logically.
He is much stronger and more realistic on the effects, for example, of pollution, particularly plastic pollution, and on the perils of aquaculture and the waste it creates. The whole problem of land sourced marine pollution and man wrought destruction through the use of explosives and poisons is well covered.
A very good overview and useful if its prejudicial sensationalist shortcomings are borne in mind.
