From Baird Maritime
The smallish war between Japan and the Soviet Union that occurred on the border of Mongolia and Manchuria was never formally declared and is little known.
It was, however, an important prelude to World War II and one that set the scene for that war and its aftermath. There is a lot to be learnt from it and a lot that was not, particularly by the Japanese.
Rather like the Spanish Civil War, Nomonhan was a prelude to and shaper of later events. Perhaps because it occurred in remotest Asia, rather than western Europe it has been neglected by historian.
