From Baird Maritime:

A most interesting and inspiring book that broadly describes the establishment, operations and demise of six of the world's greatest global monopoly trading companies.

The six companies were the Dutch East India Company; the Dutch West India Company; the English East India Company; the Russian American Company; the Hudson Bay Company; and, the British South Africa Company. All but the last operated what were effectively their own navies, both merchant and military.

In their heyday they were each large, powerful and very profitable. All were dominated, at an important stage of their existence, by one towering and overwhelming individual. This is what makes them particularly interesting. The author describes them very well.

This is both an important history and a very valuable business textbook. It well describes the benefits and disbenefits of leadership by one dominant individual. It also clearly shows the enormous wealth that can be accrued from successful trade.

Fascinating.
