The US Navy has issued a draft request for proposals (RFP) calling for interested parties to submit designs of corvette-sized unmanned surface vehicles (USVs).

The chosen design will serve as the basis for a new class of ships under the navy’s Large Unmanned Surface Vehicle (LUSV) programme.

Each LUSV will be between 200 feet (60 metres) and 300 feet (91 metres) in length and capable of accommodating various mission-specific payloads. Operation of the vessels may be either semi-autonomous or fully autonomous.

The navy is expected to issue the final RFP before the end of the year.
