One person was killed after a dredger capsized and sank in South Carolina’s Charleston Harbor on Thursday, April 11.

Dredge Brunswick had only two crewmembers on board when it capsized just before 09:50 local time.

The US Coast Guard despatched two response boats and an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter to the scene. The coast guard personnel managed to retrieve one of the crewmembers out of the water near the dredger.

The search for the missing crewmember continued into the following morning and was suspended after the individual’s body was found near Orangegrove Creek at approximately 07:50.

Coast guard boat crews had been diverted to the location but were unable to recover the crewmember in time due to the water depth.

The deceased individual was eventually brought out of the water by the crew of an airboat from the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident remains under investigation.
