Washington boatbuilder SAFE Boats International has handed over a new patrol boat to the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) in Wisconsin.

Measuring 35 by 10 feet (10.6 by three metres), Patrol Boat 460 is powered by two Mercury Marine outboards that deliver a maximum speed of over 52 knots. It is also equipped for towing other vessels that displace as much as 10,000 pounds (4,535 kilograms).

The electronics include a Raymarine radar and a Teledyne FLIR rotating thermal camera.

The new boat will monitor the waters of Lake Michigan along Milwaukee County, between the Ozaukee and Racine County lines. It will also perform safety inspections on vessels underway and while at the marinas, as well as help boaters in distress.

The boat will be operated by the MCSO but is owned by the Milwaukee County Department of Transportation’s Fleet Management Division.
