Hybrid-powered interceptor under development in Sweden

Swedish builder Marell Boats and Scania Power Solutions have begun developing a new interceptor/patrol craft fitted with hybrid propulsion.

The boat is being developed in response to the requirement of defence and security customers for a small craft that can generate minimal environmental impact even while sailing at high speeds during long-distance transits. The same boat must also be able to operate quietly and efficiently in ports, during patrols, and while supporting offshore wind farm operations.

The boat will utilise an earlier Marell interceptor design similar to those of a Stockholm Marine Police patrol boat, a response craft of the Greater Stockholm Fire Department, and a sightseeing boat operated by Hurtigruten Svalbard.

The hybrid interceptor’s launch is scheduled for the autumn of 2022. Extensive post-launch testing will include sailing in rough sea conditions and transiting at speeds in excess of 55 knots.
