Best Ice-Class Patrol Boat – Jan Mayen – LMG Marin

This lightly armed offshore patrol vessel is unusual and market-leading in a number of respects. First, it is large – almost of frigate size – and second, and most importantly, it is ice-classed and thus able to work effectively in the far North Sea and Arctic Ocean to the north of Norway.

Beautifully designed, built and detailed, this patrol vessel is a very fine example of Norwegian maritime output.

“The vessel is capable of supporting helicopter operations in rough seas,” Torbjørn Bringedal, Managing Director of LMG Marin, told Baird Maritime. “We also believe the vessel proves that civilian shipbuilders can deliver very competitive solutions for coast guard use even without a large number of military-grade specifications.”

Bringedal added that the design work on Jan Mayen involved the development of an efficient hull form and a propulsion solution in cooperation the shipyard and a model test basin with somewhat non-traditional means. Nonetheless, accurate weight estimation and weight control played important roles in ensuring the vessel achieved all the required performance parameters.

“The year 2022 was relatively good and showed how we could turn around from the challenging period we experienced just after the Covid-19 pandemic first hit,” said Bringedal. “Our revenues and the number of projects have been increasing at a better rate than in previous years. We were able to garner a significant number of newbuild projects, especially since our competency in working with green technologies seems to attract new international customers.”

In particular, LMG Marin was selected to provide design work on a new vessel for Canada’s BC Ferries. Bringedal said this was an important development, as it enabled the company to penetrate the larger-size Ro-Pax ferry market.

“We see a growing number of newbuilding projects partly due to active conflicts brewing or already occurring worldwide,” Bringedal told Baird Maritime when asked to comment on the state of the maritime security industry. “Naval operators may also begin to see the benefit of selecting local yards to supply newbuild vessels and to provide post-delivery support services.”
