The Swedish Royal Navy submarine HSwMS Uppland has rejoined the fleet following a mid-life upgrade (MLU) programme at the facilities of local shipbuilder Saab.

Uppland is the second 1990s-built Gotland-class submarine to undergo the MLU at Saab. The upgrade includes new sensors and navigation systems, giving the vessel enhanced capabilities.

Uppland has had 50 new systems installed or modified, of which 20 are new systems that in the future will be used in the next generation of submarines, the Blekinge-class.

Among the new systems is an optronic mast that will allow the crew to analyse the submarine’s surroundings with significantly greater clarity and accuracy compared to a traditional periscope.
