Russian shipyard Sevmash handed over a new nuclear-powered cruise missile submarine to the Russian Navy on Friday, July 8.

The Project 09852 submarine, which was commissioned into service upon its delivery, has been named Belgorod after a city near the border with Ukraine. It will be equipped with unmanned vehicles and will be capable of scientific research and search and rescue (SAR) missions.

The 184-metre Belgorod is a modified variant of the Project 949 series of cruise missile submarines, which are alternately known as the Oscar-class.
