Spanish state-owned shipbuilder Navantia and Dutch firm Huisman Equipment have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to compete in a tender to supply new submarines for the Royal Netherlands Navy.

The two companies have begun evaluating various locations throughout the Netherlands as potential sites for facilities optimised for the construction and assembly of a new class of submarines that will replace the 1990s-era Walrus-class vessels by 2025.

Navantia’s bid for the tender is a 3,000-tonne design that will be based on the Isaac Peral-class vessels that the company is building for the Spanish Navy.
