Naval Group handed over the nuclear-powered attack submarine Suffren to the French Armament Procurement Agency on Friday, November 6.

The submarine is the lead ship of the Barracuda-class slated to replace the French Navy’s aging Rubis-class vessels.

Suffren features a centralised and automated control system that enhances underwater manoeuvrability as well as the capability to discreetly deploy and recover a small team of special operations troops for clandestine missions. Armament will include torpedoes, cruise missiles, and mines.

Suffren and its five sisters, which will be delivered within the next decade, are each expected to have a service life of over 30 years.
