An ex-Indian Navy diesel-electric submarine has been commissioned into service with the Myanmar Navy, making it the latter country’s first ever submarine.

The submarine was originally completed in the Soviet Union in 1987 as the Project 877 or Kilo-class boat INS Sindhuvir. Upon its recommissioning, it was renamed UMS Minye Theinkhathu after the 16th century viceroy of Taungoo, a dissolved kingdom that now forms part of modern-day Myanmar’s Bago Region.

The submarine underwent refitting at Hindustan Shipyard prior to being handed over to the Myanmar government.
