The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) of India has approved the shortlisting of local shipyards and potential original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) that would collaborate on the construction of conventional-powered submarines for the country’s navy.

Included in the shortlist are shipbuilders Mazagon Dock and Larsen and Toubro (L&T) and OEMs Naval Group, Navantia, ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS), Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME), and Russia’s Rubin Design Bureau.

The winning shipyard-OEM team is expected to deliver six new submarines to the navy under a contract valued at approximately US$7 billion.
