Huntington Ingalls Industries’ (HII) Newport News Shipbuilding division delivered the future attack submarine Delaware to the US Navy on Friday, October 25.

The future USS Delaware, which successfully completed sea trials earlier this month, is the ninth Virginia-class submarine to be delivered by Newport News and the 18th built as part of an agreement with General Dynamics Electric Boat.

The submarine is the second US Navy ship to honour America’s first state. The first was a 1910-built dreadnought battleship which was also constructed by Newport News.

The future USS Delaware is scheduled for commissioning in 2020.
