German shipbuilder ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) has handed over the fourth and final Type 209 diesel-electric submarine slated for the Egyptian Navy.
The future S-44 will join its sister vessels in providing maritime security for Egypt’s interests in the Mediterranean and Red Seas.
The submarine has a length of 62 metres, a hull diameter of 6.2 metres, a maximum submerged displacement of 1,600 tonnes, and space for 30 crewmembers. It can reach a maximum diving depth of 500 metres, a maximum speed of approximately 22 knots, and a range of 700 kilometres at a submerged cruising speed of four knots.
