Spanish naval shipbuilder Navantia and Norway’s Kongsberg Defence and Aerospace (KDA) have entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the aim of exploring potential collaboration for the support and future modernisation of the Fridtjof Nansen-class frigates of the Royal Norwegian Navy.

The frigates, which were delivered between 2006 and 2011, were designed and built by Navantia for the Royal Norwegian Navy. Kongsberg was one of the main sub-contractors for the frigate program and supplied the Norwegian components of the combat system including the anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare systems as well as the navigation system.

Navantia has been providing maintenance support for the ships since 2013 while Kongsberg has been providing sustainment support since their delivery.
