Japan starts converting second Izumo-class helicopter carrier for jet operations

Japanese shipbuilder Japan Marine United (JMU) has begun work to convert the Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force (JMSDF) helicopter carrier JS Kaga to enable it to also accommodate jet aircraft.

Following the upgrade, the second Izumo-class carrier will have dedicated facilities for launching, recovering, and supporting F-35B Lightning II short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL) multi-role fighter aircraft in addition to anti-submarine warfare helicopters.

Kaga‘s sister, class lead ship JS Izumo, is undergoing a similar refit that is scheduled to be completed by early 2027. Japanese defence officials expect the conversion works will enhance the two ships’ ability to provide air defence for deployed JMSDF vessels as well as vessels of other allied nations in the Indo-Pacific region.
