The Indonesian Ministry of Defence has entered into agreements with Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri for the construction of six new FREMM frigates and for the modernisation and sale of two Maestrale-class frigates as well as related logistical support.

For the construction of the Indonesian Navy FREMM frigates, Fincantieri will serve as the prime contractor while Indonesian state-owned shipyard PAL will be a sub-contractor.

Meanwhile, the two Maestrale-class frigates that are earmarked for transfer are nearing the end of their operational lives in service with the Italian Navy and will be decommissioned soon. Modernisation on these two vessels will be carried out afterwards.
