Future US Navy littoral combat ship Nantucket launched in Wisconsin

The future US Navy littoral combat ship (LCS) USS Nantucket was christened and launched into the water at the Wisconsin facilities of Fincantieri Marinette Marine (FMM) on Saturday, August 7.

The 378-foot (115-metre) vessel is the 14th Freedom-class LCS to be built by FMM under the Lockheed Martin-led shipbuilding team and the third US Navy ship to be named after Nantucket Island in Massachusetts.

Once completed, the future Nantucket will be capable of speeds in excess of 40 knots and will be equipped with surface-to-air missiles and a BAE Systems Mk 110 57-millimetre naval gun.
