South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reports that six South Korean Navy sailors suffered varying degrees of injury after a grenade exploded on board their vessel on Tuesday, March 3.

The incident occurred aboard an unnamed Chamsuri-class fast attack craft at around 12:20 local time on Tuesday while the crew were participating in a firing drill in the waters near Geoje Island off the country’s southwest.

Senior navy officials then immediately ordered that the drill be halted to allow the evacuation of the injured sailors. Two of the wounded were reported to be in serious condition.

The navy has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the explosion to help prevent similar incidents from happening in future.
