Builder’s trials begin for Russia’s new Project 636.3 sub

United Shipbuilding Corporation’s (USC) Admiralty Shipyard has commenced builder’s trials of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a new Project 636.3 diesel-electric submarine slated for the Russian Navy’s Pacific Fleet.

The trials being carried out in the Baltic Sea include diving and navigation tests as well as tests of the submarine’s communications and life support systems. The ship has also already completed its first successful test dive.

Admiralty Shipyard intends to conduct all necessary builder’s trials of the submarine before it finally returns to port, as opposed to having multiple at-sea testing periods with port stays in between.

Upon conclusion of the builder’s trials, the submarine will undergo final preparations for state tests to be conducted by the navy.

Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky has a length of 70 metres, a maximum diving depth of 300 metres, a speed of 18 knots, a range of 12,000 kilometres at seven knots, and a crew of 52.
