US Navy christens littoral combat ship Oakland
The US Navy christened its newest Independence-class littoral combat ship (LCS), the future USS Oakland, on Saturday, June 29.
It is the third US Navy ship named for the city of Oakland in California. The first Oakland was commissioned in 1918 and used for cargo transport. The second, an Atlanta-class light cruiser, was commissioned in 1942, and during seven years of service, it played a key role in many anti-aircraft missions across the Asia-Pacific theatre of operations.
Built by Austal USA, the future Oakland will be homeported in San Diego.
