The keel of the future USS Carl M. Levin was laid at a ceremony attended by the ship’s namesake at Bath Iron Works’ shipyard on Friday, February 1.

The Arleigh Burke-class destroyer honours Carl M. Levin, who served as a US Senator from 1979 to 2015 and as Chairman and Ranking Member of the US Senate Committee on Armed Services from 2001 to 2003 and again from 2007 to 2015.

The future Carl M. Levin will have a length of 160 metres, a draught of 10 metres, a displacement of 9,300 tonnes, and four General Electric LM2500-30 gas turbines delivering a total output of 75 MW.
